Our students achieved success from the STEM trip this week (w/c 28th October) at the University of Manchester. Over the course of 2 workshops, our students were split into 2 groups, with one of our groups winning the overall day against other schools in attendance (Dean Trust Ardwick, Manchester Academy, Coop Swinton and Buile Hill). Massive congratulations to the winning students: Noah, William, Wilfred, Ted, Walter.
Angry Birds Catapult
In the Angry Bird-Catapult Activity, students will embarked on an exciting journey of engineering and physics exploration as they took on the challenge of building their very own catapults. Inspired by the popular Angry Birds game, this hands-on activity not only sparked creativity but also deepen understanding of fundamental principles of motion and energy.
Participants were divided into teams and provided with a variety of materials including sticks, rubber bands, paper, and other crafting supplies to construct their catapults. They also had access to basic tools such as scissors and tape to assemble their creations.
RoboMaze Mayhem
This activity consisted of a small presentation introducing the concept of robotics covering what is a robot, how they are constructed and how they are controlled. The main bulk of this session was based around programming a small robot to solve a maze, students worked in teams of 4-5 to program different robots. Initial tasks were be to get the system to move and show an image on the display, followed by how well it can drive around in a square. For each task, the teams were awarded points, and the winning teams received a prize.
