4th Nov 2024

I wanted to share some success from the STEM trip last week to the University of Manchester! Over the course of two workshops, our students were split into two groups, with one of our groups winning the overall day against other schools in attendance (Dean Trust Ardwick, Manchester Academy, Coop Swinton and Buile Hill). Congratulations to the winning students: Noah, William, Wilfred, Ted, Walter.

In addition, our RE Crafts Club which meet on a Thursday after school were busy preparing pumpkins for the  festival of Halloween last week. I wanted to recognise the hard work of our TAs, who regularly go above and beyond for our young people. Ms. Donker in particular worked hard to support our young people in this activity.

MEA Central’s Annual Spelling Bee Competition- Words to Practice!

We are thrilled to announce that we’ll be launching our annual Spelling Bee Competition for year 7 and year 8 students, designed to encourage our students to develop their spelling skills and broaden their vocabulary! This year, many of our chosen words are from the students’ knowledge organisers, giving students a fantastic opportunity to apply what they’ve already learned. This competition will begin with semi-finals in each form group, taking place during the week commencing 11th November.

For the semi-finals, students should prepare by learning the official list of words that they’ll be quizzed on during the competition (see word list below). Each form will select the two students who know the most spellings to represent their form in the finals.

Independent Learning and Homework: French/Spanish

All students should now have received their login details for Language Nut, MEA Central’s platform for all French and Spanish homework. If your child has not received their login details, they must speak to their teacher to obtain their details. All login details are also available via Central Online on the MEA Central website. Language Nut homework is set weekly, every Monday and students have a week to complete their assignments. Every Monday, a new assignment goes live for students to complete from home. If you experience any problems accessing the Language Nut website, again please ask your child to speak to their Languages teacher.

The grand finale will be held in Room G7 during the week commencing 2nd December. We look forward to celebrating our talented spellers and hope to see many students inspired to take part in this fun and challenging event. Thank you for your support in encouraging your child to practice and participate!

Homework

There has been excellent engagement with homework across the school so far in the Autumn term. There has been 4500 hours of Sparx Maths learning completed by Central scholars and our Know-It-All quiz showed excellent engagement with the daily retrieval practice that students complete using their knowledge organisers.

Sparx will send you an email if your child has not completed their maths homework. You can check their red homework book to see whether they have completed their retrieval practice homework.

This week students will have been given their Autumn 2 Knowledge Organisers. For some subjects this may be the same as the one they used in Autumn 1. These are accessible to parents via the school website. https://www.meacentral.org.uk/curriculum/homework-1

Project Central/Academic Reading

There have been some excellent Project Central/Academic Reading submissions! Thank you to parents for supporting with these. Winners have been announced by Heads of Year in the year group assemblies today.  All students who submitted an entry will receive a Take Part CAP which parents will be able to see via Arbor.

Pastoral Team Information 2024/25

With Bonfire night approaching tomorrow 5th of November, please see some information on safety awareness to ensure our students are safe in the community.

Support for young people

  • Bonfire night is always a fun night, make sure you are safe! There are major risks of using fireworks and should always be handled by an appropriate adult. If not handled properly, fireworks can cause burns, eye injuries, and hearing damage.

  • Fireworks cannot be bought by anybody under the age of 18. If you are worried about a friend, you can speak to a member of the pastoral or safeguarding team.

  • There will be lots of events going on in your area. Attend an organised event so you are safe and can enjoy bonfire night properly!

Head of Year Messages

Year 7 – Ms. Charis Gates

It has been my pleasure to welcome year 7 back last week. It was a great start with 95.44% attendance this week, which is our highest this year. Please remember that great attendance helps students to access their fantastic future. All scholars need to be fully equipped with their planner, knowledge organiser, red book and reading book. These items should be in their bags every day.

I am so pleased with all of the scholars who showed the value of participation by creating masks for the Project Central Challenge over the half term. I want to say a massive congratulations to Lily Hamilton and Eesa Sameer who came joint 1st place for their Project Central. Their masks were INCREDIBLE! Shoutouts go to Oscar Kelly, Sam Long, Sol Sembatya, Eli Fitzgerald and Fariah Fatima.

Ms Gates and Ms Thompson

Year 8 – Ms. Bryan

Last week we have welcomed year 8 back to Autumn 2 term, and what a wonderful week it has been!!

I wanted to share some success from the STEM trip to the University of Manchester. Massive congratulations to the winning students: Noah, William, Wilfred, Ted, Walter. There has also been a COP29 trip held at WHGS, which allowed 11 students to present on climate change solutions in front of other local schools and local MPs. The students represented MEAC in such a scholarly manner, we are very proud of you all.

A huge well done and thank you to all year 8 students who took part in the Project Central task, the submissions were incredibly creative! All submissions have recieved a CAP, which individual and group prizes also been awarded.

Finally, this half term we are having a focus on our students looking like scholars, and being prepared like scholars. I would appreciate your support in ensuring your child arrives to school in full uniform and equipped to learn

S.Bryan and Mx Umpierrez

Year 9– Mr J Anatsui

Week 1 of 8 and a welcome back to all our scholars to what will be a jam packed half term. It was great to see all returning with the correct uniform and equipment focussed and ready to learn. We believe in starting strong so will be focussing on ensuring all students have the necessary equipment for learning in form time and are dressed like scholars. Please support us by ensuring your child is ready for school by having their equipment and dressed in full school uniform.

This week will see the start of Review week where year 9 will be given feedback from their big tests, this is an important week, we expect all to be fully engaged and have been promoting the value of the week. Please support Review week by encouraging your child to focus on the feedback on how to improve rather than being fixated on the result.

Lastly, we will be sending home letters for a football fixture for year 9 boys that will be taking place next week 7/11 this is a great opportunity to fulfill our value of taking part and representing the school, we look forward to arranging many fixtures this half term.

Year 10 – Mr J Roper

Welcome Back Year 10 to what will be another really busy term. Once again, I must start my newsletter with praising the manner in which the Y10 pupils have returned to school; Uniform continues to be really good, equipment and resources for classes (including pupil planners) is exceptional and the completion of 'Project Central' over the half term has been really impressive.

It has been great to speak with so many of the pupils about them seeking their own self placement for Work Experience. A reminder again that this is a 3 day placement that the pupils will complete during March. The week will follow the schedule below;

  • Monday 24th March - Careers Fair (at school)

  • Tuesday 25th/Wednesday 26th/Thursday 27th March - Placement

  • Friday 28th March - Mock interview

More details and activities will be completed during form period where the pupils will prepare themselves for their time spent in the workplace. If you have any queries regarding a placement for your child, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Have a great weekend,

Mr Roper & Ms Renshaw

Year 11 – Mr J Rooza

It was another fantastic week for our Year 11 students, who continue to impress us with their scholarly habits and commitment to their studies. With an important half term ahead, they have settled back into routines, demonstrating both focus and maturity.

As a reminder, progress exams begin today Monday 4th November. Each student has been given a personalised timetable to help them manage their time and be prepared. These exams are a vital part of our assessment process, and the results will play an important role in the college application process, alongside the references we send to colleges. Please encourage your child to prepare thoroughly to achieve their best possible outcomes.

Additionally, a reminder that the deadline for college applications and personal statements is approaching on 2nd December. These should be completed and submitted to form tutors. We encourage students to keep working on these, seeking feedback where needed, to ensure they’re presenting themselves as well-rounded, ambitious applicants.
